The restoration work saw the deconstruction and
reconstruction of no. 80 Derngate to house a new exhibition centre
and the restoration of no. 78 using our own expert craftsmen and
specialist subcontractors to completely restore the building to
its original form. The project included the management of numerous
subcontractors including specialist conservators to complete the
project. No. 78 is now a museum and an exhibition of Charles Rennie
Mackintosh pieces is housed next door at no 80 Derngate. This
project was nominated for and has received several awards.
78 Derngate is the only example outside Scotland of a Charles
Rennie Mackintosh designed house. Mackintosh was commissioned
in 1917 by W J Bassett Lowke to redesign this Georgian house.
The property was bought by Northampton High School for girls in
1964 and in 1965; it was declared a Grade II listed building.
The school sold the property in the early 1990’s and local/national
groups became active in conserving the building. In 1996, the
local Borough Council purchased the two houses and in 1998, the
Derngate Trust was formed.
