78 Derngate is the only example outside Scotland of a Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed house. Mackintosh was commissioned in 1917 by W J Bassett Lowke to redesign this Georgian house.

The property was bought by Northampton High School for girls in 1964 and in 1965; it was declared a Grade II listed building. The school sold the property in the early 1990’s and local/national groups became active in conserving the building. In 1996, the local Borough Council purchased the two houses and in 1998, the Derngate Trust was formed.
