The Spurriergate Centre, based in the former St. Michael’s Church, was created in the late 1980’s to provide a place where the community can seek spiritual guidance, physical refreshment and a listening ear. The oldest part of the building, its slender columns, dates back to the 12th century but there have been a number of changes over the years including the rebuilding of the east wall in 1821.
William Anelay was appointed to carry out some essential fabric repairs to ensure that the building remains watertight and secure for years to come. The works involved timber repairs to the roof structure and recovering using the original tiles. New stainless steel gutters were introduced as was cast-iron eaves. Internally the building benefitted from timber repairs to the beams, re-plastering of ceilings and decorations throughout. The work was completed Autumn 2011.
