Bettys Café Tea Rooms, Harrogate:

Client:   Bettys and Taylors Group Ltd
    Architect :   Nicholas Associates Architects
    Contract Period:   112 weeks

Bettys, the famous Yorkshire Café Tea Rooms in Harrogate, underwent a major phased refurbishment over a two-year period. The refurbishment and remodelling project began with the construction of a new four-story extension and staircase to the rear of the building and the amalgamation of a neighbouring property that adds significantly to the overall floor space.

Extensive work was carried out to the upper floors to refurbish existing offices and integrate new workspace. Staff welfare facilities were upgraded and the kitchens extensively refurbished. On the ground floor, the shop area was relocated within the newly remodelled neighbouring premises and a new cafe bar situated in its place.

The building, including the first floor Imperial Suite, an eighty-seat restaurant overlooking Harrogate’s famous Stray, contains many original period features, which were sensitively preserved and restored such as distinctive cornicing, joinery and fine carvings. Externally, the property benefited from roofing, Leadwork, paving and canopy refurbishments.

The building, situated within a busy town centre location, remained in use throughout the construction period and therefore care was taken to minimise disruption to the tearooms visitors and staff.

The contract was completed late Autumn 2009 and won a Harrogate Civic Trust Award. Please see Awards
