The extensive and original lead and slate covered
roof of the magnificent Bowes Museum, which was built in the late
nineteenth century, had deteriorated to a point where minor repairs
were no longer viable. Water had been entering the building forcing
museum staff to take action to avoid the structure and contents
being damaged.
Work began in September 2005 to carry out some timber
repairs and replace the existing roofing materials with slate
and over one hundred tonnes of sand-cast lead. The central roof
‘dome’ required close partnership with our slate supplier
to obtain curved slates to follow the shape of the roof. Works
took place within a strictly phased programme whilst ensuring
minimal disruption to the museum staff and visitors. See awards.

The Bowes Museum originated in a private foundation created between
1862 and 1875 by John & Josephine Bowes. It has a collection
of European fine and decorative arts of the period 1400-1875,
unrivalled in the North of England and outstanding in Britain.
