This Grade II Listed former grain storage warehouse was substantially restored and refurbished to provide office and retail facilities in one of Wakefield’s regeneration and development areas. The project provided a challenge for all involved as one elevation of the building fronts immediately on to the River Calder and required cantilevered scaffolding to gain access.
Initial stages involved the stabilisation and underpinning of the building to include substantial piling works. The original warehouse contained a large number of original timber beams, which were repaired and where necessary, replaced. Existing masonry was extensively restored with 100% re-pointing works. Where appropriate, masonry was replaced with new pieces to match the existing stone.
All windows received new frames and glazing with the roof benefiting from reclaimed and replacement stone slates and new rainwater goods. The atrium was fitted with a new roof light to provide a centralised point of natural illumination through the core of the building.
The project was handed back to the client in November 2008 and has since won a number of awards
