Castle Howard Stray Walls, North Yorkshire:

    Client:   The Castle Howard Estate
    Architect :   Wiles and Maguire
    Contract Period:   68 weeks

Castle Howard is a magnificent 18th century stately home and has almost two hundred listed buildings and monuments scattered across its 10,000-acre historic landscape. It has been home to the Howard family for over three hundred years.

Supported by funding from Natural England, William Anelay carried out three phases of stabilisation works to the Estate Stray Walls and Towers. The project included, where necessary, the removal of ivy from stonework to access and repair wall foundations, repairs to the wall fabric and the replacement of damaged masonry. The walls were extensively re-pointed. Where existing stone could not be reused, it was sourced locally and in keeping with the existing masonry.

The house and gardens remained in use throughout the construction period which was completed Summer 2011.
