Our Small Works and Maintenance department has been contracted to carry out essential refurbishment works in one of the city’s prominent public buildings, York Art Gallery. The Ceramics Gallery is dedicated to the country’s most important pottery collections and on reopening in September 2009, showcased some of the finest examples from private collections; some that have never before been seen by the public.
The refurbishment works involved major electrical installations and the repair and restoration of the blockwood flooring. To provide more natural light the existing ceiling was removed and the underlying timber trusses and decorative ironwork trusses were exposed and re-decorated. Works included the installation of windcatchers to provide natural air circulation and ventilation within the room.
Great care was taken to prevent disruption to the rest of the Art Gallery throughout the construction process by thorough dust control.
