The Community of the Resurrection is an Anglican monastic community located at Mirfield in West Yorkshire. Inspired by the rule of St Benedict, it is fully part of the Anglican Church of England and its brethren work hand-in-hand with a wide variety of people in the UK and overseas. Founded in Oxford in 1892 by the Rev Charles Gore, the Community moved to Mirfield in 1898 to be close to the then thriving industrial centres. The Church of the Resurrection was constructed to serve the Community some years later in 1912.
Constructed of stone from a local quarry and topped by distinctive copper roofs in the Byzantine style, the Grade II Listed church which serves the growing monastic community, is now being extensively refurbished one hundred years after it was built to provide a place of worship that offers 21st century facilities for its diverse congregation.
The existing stone floor is being removed and the floor levelled with a lift shaft introduced at ground floor level to provide ‘access for all’ to the gallery above. Under floor heating is being installed and once in place, ceramic tiles will be laid over. The Church requires extensive refurbishment of its heating, lighting and plumbing systems to provide more efficient and cost effective services with a modern acoustic system integrated into the programme of works.
Externally, broken clay roof tiles will be repaired and damaged cast iron rain water goods will be replaced with new. A number of the windows require attention with repairs to the leaded stained glass and stone mullions. The project is due to be completed November 2011.
