The History Shop in Wigan now known as the ‘Museum of Wigan Life’ has been subjected to extensive internal and external refurbishment works. The building, designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse was Wigan’s first public library however since the early 1990’s, was being used to hold temporary displays, in-house exhibitions and to provide a home for Wigan’s local history collection.
Externally, the grade II listed building underwent slate and leadwork roofing works as well as external masonry and brickwork repairs. Internally the property saw major improvements through extensive re-ordering, which opened up the available space. Works included full mechanical and electrical throughout with sophisticated lighting systems and improved access for all including a platform lift. New workstations, reception and island counters as well as new flooring and decorations have been installed throughout.
The project, which was funded jointly by the Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, Wigan Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund was completed Spring 2010. The refurbishment project aims to provide greater access and attract a more diverse audience so that users can learn more about their own and the borough’s history.
