Works to the top of the spire included a major programme of restoration
and iron removal. The removal of the top twenty-six courses of
masonry including the buttress pinnacles offered a substantial
challenge in logistics, bearing in mind the scaffolding had been
erected pre-contract and was only for inspection purposes.
The clock mechanism and faces were removed from site to undergo
extensive restoration. A key client requirement was that on completion
the clock had to keep time accurately. Other works included specialist
glazing, lightning protection, bird protection, lead work and
roofing works. The project proved to be a successful partnering
contract for a beacon Council.
