William Anelay was appointed principal contractor to carry out restoration and refurbishment works to a grade II listed stud farm at Myton on Swale. The stud farm was built in 1870 with the aim of farming and raising ‘stylish harness horses’. During the First World War around 9000 horses held at the stud farm were used for the war effort.
The project involved the restoration and reconstruction of single storey farm buildings and a four-story high water tower. Brickwork was repaired/replaced and re-pointed. The existing grey Welsh slate was removed allowing the timber structures to be assessed and repaired/replaced. The roof was then be re-slated using as much of the original material as possible. Where necessary roof glazing panels were replaced as was rainwater goods. Where required, doors and windows were refurbished and redecorated. The derelict water tower was restored back to full working order and additional roosts were provided for the expanding resident bat population.
The estate remained operating as a working farm throughout the project, which was completed late Summer 2010. The stud farm will be used to provide education facilities for visitors and local schools.
