Stricklandgate House was built as a family home by Joseph Maude in 1776. Joseph had amassed his fortune as a coal exporter in Sunderland and after selling his business moved to Kendal, eventually becoming one of the town’s most influential merchants. Since his death in 1803, Stricklandgate House has served a variety of uses and has been the home to a number of organisations including the Kendal Bank of Savings, the Kendal Literary & Science Society and the South Lakeland District Council. The building now serves the important function of providing accommodation for a number of voluntary organisations and receives on average 12,000 visitors and callers each year.
In June 2009 the Stricklandgate House Trust observed its obligations to keep this grade II Listed property maintained, and appointed restoration specialists William Anelay to carry out external repairs to the house and an adjoining cottage. Works included re-roofing (salvaging where possible original slates) with gutter and rainwater good repairs/replacements. Elsewhere, the property benefited from repairs to the coping, the raking out and re-pointing of stonework using traditional lime mortars and render cleaning and refurbishment. Some timber window repairs and replacements were necessary to keep the building draft free and weather tight. Works were completed in December 2009.
