Owners of Syningthwaite Priory appointed William Anelay to carry out some essential repairs to this Grade I listed property. The building, originally a 12th century Cistercian priory with a much later Georgian addition was used as a family home until the 1980’s. The building required essential stabilisation and some masonry and roofing repairs to prevent further deterioration. In the longer term, the owners would like to see the property become once again their family residence. To help towards funding this, William Anelay was been contracted to build luxury holiday accommodation adjacent to the Priory involving barn and outbuilding conversions as well as new build elements.
The scheme, to produce seven self contained luxury units and a communal reception/gymnasium area, was built in a cloister formation using as much masonry as possible from the existing derelict barns and outbuildings with two wings being constructed in brick. The project involved extensive masonry dismantling, sorting and rework with some additional stone to blend with the original pieces. Windows are constructed from traditional timber and the roofs finished with terracotta tiles. Internally, each unit is fitted out to a very high standard and equipped with Italian kitchens, luxury bathrooms and was fully decorated and carpeted ready for furniture installation. The holiday apartments are situated around a stone flagged courtyard with water feature. The project was completed in Summer 2009.
