William Anelay was contracted to refurbish a grade II Listed Victorian gatehouse lodge that sits alongside the imposing Abbey on top of the cliffs and overlooking the Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby. The building had been under-utilised for some time and the owners, English Heritage, felt that it would be better used as a ticket office, retail and orientation centre.
In addition to the Lodge refurbishment, William Anelay was commissioned to produce a feature stone plinth. This was in preparation for the installation of a replica of a Borghese statue, a life size statue of a gladiator that had once stood in the courtyard outside Cholmley House, the Abbey’s visitors centre. The plinth design was based on the original plinth that now sits in the wall to the left of the visitors centre.
The project involved the smooth coordination of both in-house labour as well as other specialist contractors. External works included some slate, lead and caste iron rainwater goods replacements and a new oak and glazed porch entrance with ramp providing easier access for all. The property was stripped out and installed with new internal walls and staircase, a new under floor heating system and full mechanical and electrical throughout. The building has benefited from a new kitchen and staff welfare facilities, new flooring, installation of retail display units and shelving and full redecorations.
