William Etty Statue, York:
This project involved very careful cleaning and conservation of this statue positioned outside the Library, adjacent to the fountain. Work was carried out inside a protective canopy to minimise disruption to the public using the JOS and DOFF methods. Defective joints were carefully raked out by hand and re-pointed using lime mortar.
William Etty is York's most famous artist. Etty, a slightly younger contemporary of Turner and Constable was born in York and then retired to although spent his working career in London . He is remarkable for being the only major British painter before the 20th century to have specialised in nude paintings in the face of public censure. For more information visit the following link:
