This project involved very careful cleaning and
conservation of this statue positioned outside the Library, adjacent
to the fountain. Work was carried out inside a protective canopy
to minimise disruption to the public using the JOS and DOFF methods.
Defective joints were carefully raked out by hand and re-pointed
using lime mortar.

William Etty is York's most famous artist. Etty,
a slightly younger contemporary of Turner and Constable was born
in York and then retired to although spent his working career
in London . He is remarkable for being the only major British
painter before the 20th century to have specialised in nude paintings
in the face of public censure.
