Appley Bridge is a town in Lancashire, England The population of Appley Bridge was 13,868 at the 2011 census It has been suggested that there were Roman settlements near to where Appley Bridge now stands and it may have even been known as “Eboracum” (meaning York’s fort) during this time period In 1086 William the Conqueror granted land around what is now Appley bridge to Roger de Poitou who founded an abbey here which he named after his mother Saint Apollonia or St Augustine of Canterbury; hence giving rise to one possible derivation for the name 'Appleton' In 1212 King John granted further lands including those on either side of Appleby Brook downstream from its confluence with Cocker Beck - thus founding both present day villages: Upper Appleby and Lower Appleby respectively These grants formed part of a much larger manorial estate belonging originally to Robert de Mowbray Earl Of Northampton but by 1280 had passed into royal hands through marriage to Eleanor de Montfort wife of Henry III This large area stretching across several hundred acres became known as "Mowbray's Moss" At some point between then and 1541 when Sir Thomas Fairfax took possession, most if not all buildings within these boundaries disappeared leaving only their earthworks visible today By 1650 however almost everything apart from scattered farmsteads had vanished again so completely that Parliament ordered surveys be made in order identify any remaining properties suitable for sequestration under various statutes such as Tithes Forfeiture Acts etc One result was two maps entitled 'The Manor And Parish Of Applebie'drawn up by surveyors James Ogilvie & Co dated 1875 & 1886 respectively showing just over half acre plots still extant covering areas adjacent tot eh modern-day High Street/Market Place junction down towards Church Lane thence along Chapel Lane until reaching Westgate Road before turning left onto South Gate leading out onto Moorland Road passing close enought othe remains ot Old Hall Farmhouse t0 note tha tth eir plot lay immediately opposite th e entrance gate Some years later another map produced b y George Gower Esq, Surveyor General To Her Majestys Land Registry Office also showed extensive rural depopulation having reduced many small holdings throughout m appletree township whi ch included parts ov er three quarters ov th ese original surveyed 1 ½ acre plots Th ey are rep
